Why you should have a newborn session, is Newborn Photography worth it?

November 2023

Becoming a parent and welcoming a new baby into your family is a truly magical experience. It is a time where we feel a desire to freeze time to savour, capture and cherish every moment. Photographs can do just this, but with many other expenses having a new baby brings, you may be wondering if newborn photos are worth it. There may be some hesitancy for something that might not seem essential and that’s understandable.

However, there are many reasons why you should have newborn photos taken, and as a newborn photographer, I’ve never met anyone who has regretted investing in these images. Here are a few reasons why I believe newborn photos are worth it.

1. Capture the beginnings of this new chapter

The first few weeks go by in a blur while you settle into your bubble and find your feet. Your new addition is thriving but quickly changing in these early days that just seem to fly by. This stage is especially quick where the days all roll into one, loving that most precious little person. As hard as we try our memories fade, but newborn photos offer a unique opportunity to preserve these moments. As time goes by these images will continue to be appreciated and cherished by future generations.

2. Preserve the tiny details

Every newborn is different, they are all unique with their own special and delicate features. From their tiny fingers and toes, soft downy hair, sleepy smiles, lush lashes and pudgy rolls. A photographer has the experience, equipment and creative eye to capture these details and highlight the sweet features of your newborn baby. A photographer can produce stunning images to show the individuality of your baby. Newborns only look like newborns for a short time so done sooner rather than later you will have that newborn baby to look back on for years to come.

3. Smart phones offer quantity rather than quality photos

We all have hundreds if not thousand pictures on our phones, the accessibility is great and convenient. I encourage you to take plenty of pictures yourself, but how many do we actually look back on? If you are anything like me then not often. In those first weeks, parenting is exhausting and taking photos can be challenging. It’s usually mum who takes all the photos but shouldn’t mum be in some too? A photographer will enable you to have an experience where you can enjoy all the cuddles and love while trusting they will capture the candid, authentic and special moments between your family. I think it’s so important for mum to be in these, especially for the children as they grow up, it’s something they will treasure.

4. Display beautiful artwork

Of all the photos we take on our phones, how many are actually printed off and displayed around our homes. Memories feel more meaningful when you can hold them in your hands. The physical prints offer a tangible way of remembering, cherishing and looking back on memories that would otherwise end up living on a hard drive or on the cloud. Every day you can admire the moments you have documented on your walls and marvel at the details.
